Broward Legal

Broward Legal

No longer Broward Health, now it Barrett’s Broward Legal While working on some other Broward Health articles, I awoke to find the following “Broward Legal”  ‘contact’ message to me from a former Broward Health physician.  I found the message so striking, on point and exactly right that I had to immediately make it into a post.  While the contact was not anonymous, which in itself is remarkable – it did self-verify his remarks. Here is the message: I recently left…

Broward Health’s Legal Czar Barrett Weaponizing the IRO

Broward Health’s Legal Czar Barrett Weaponizing the IRO

Broward Health Board’s failure to provide any effective oversight into the activities of Corporate Counsel’s legal department has allowed Broward Health’s legal czar Barrett to weaponize the IRO process against those she feels are against her in the organization.  The cost of Barrett’s misuse of Broward Health’s legal resources is humongous – in the millions of dollars.   Details are largely unavailable because various public records requests relating to her spending go unanswered. “IRO” stands for “Independent Review Organization.”  Its purpose…

Broward Health gives Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO) to Executives

The PTO payouts were more than five million dollars ($5,000,000) Last March, Broward Health’s CEO Beverly Capasso and her executive team unilaterally decided to pay off all accrued employee time for tier 1 and tier 2 employees (about 300 managers), eliminate PTO accruals, and institute a policy of unlimited paid time off (as approved by their managers).  The payouts were more than five million dollars ($5,000,000). Newly appointed Commissioner Ray Berry discovered staff’s unilateral decision occurred without Board consultation because,…

INDICTMENTS AND BREACHES OF ETHICS ARE ENDEMIC AT BROWARD HEALTH

INDICTMENTS AND BREACHES OF ETHICS ARE ENDEMIC AT BROWARD HEALTH

In the sometimes bizarro world of Broward Health, breaches of ethics and a Civil War is brewing just below the surface.  One side is Lynn Barrett, Broward Health’s Corporate Counsel. Remarkably it appears the other side is CEO, Bev Capasso, recently emboldened by her loosely negotiated employment contract.  Broward Health’s Board of Commissioners seems to split among the two camps.  Then there was the appointment of the newest Board member, Commissioner Ray Berry.  He was impressive at his first set of public meetings…

May 2018 Broward Health Marathon Board Meetings

May 2018 Broward Health Marathon Board Meetings

5/30/18 Broward Health Marathon Board Meetings A lot is going on at Broward Health.  Some of it is good.  Some of it, not so much.  Probably the biggest news for a public oversight perspective is the Governor’s latest appointment of Ray Berry.  While the Governor still needs to appoint two more commissioners to the Board, based on the performance of Commissioner Berry in his first public meetings at Broward Health – the Governor appears to have made a good choice…

Broward Health March 2018 Board Meetings

Broward Health March 2018 Board Meetings

Before I begin my comments about last week’s Broward Health’s meetings, I want to explain how I excerpt the  Meeting Agenda Packets.  While I am recording the meeting, I make every attempt to get copies of any and all the documents the Board or Committee is reviewing and on which they base their decisions.  I then scan all these documents specifically excluding the voluminous medical staff credentialing sections and post them as Agenda Meeting Excerpts. My Meeting Impressions: HR Committee…

Barrett Continues to Purge Top Broward Health Employees

Barrett Continues to Purge Top Broward Health Employees

The week began with a public records lawsuit against Broward Health, then came news that the vacationing Senior Vice president Broward Health personal director Dionne Wong had resigned, then CEO of Broward Health’s flagship hospital – Broward Medical, was forced out.  Although I do not, as yet have copies of their severance agreements – I suspect that they were consistent with the gag order agreement of ousted Doris Peek from a couple of weeks ago.  I have made a public…
